Background
Under the framework of the CREWS Accelerator project in Nepal, it is proposed to improve in-country response to multi-risk information and warnings through increased coordination between NMHSs and Disaster Risk Management authorities, and other relevant authorities at the sub-national and local levels and move towards translating and communicating hydromet impact-based warnings to vulnerable communities and enable early action measures. Under this proposal, Community-based Flood management (CBFM) approaches will be implemented in the areas of Kathmandu Valley where recent flooding occurred in September 2024 enhancing their self-help capabilities to the Hydro-Meteorological events including the development of early warning dissemination channels and improve end users’ response including gender mainstreaming.
Objective of the Inception workshop
- The overall objective of the Inception workshop will be to present the concept of the Integrated Flood Management with good practices, define and agree on activities proposed, stakeholders to be involved and implementation plan.
More specifically, the workshop will provide an opportunity to:
- To bring together relevant stakeholders at all levels to present and discuss the IFM concepts, objectives, and implementation plans focusing on feasibility, partnership, and sustainability
- Understand the current capacities, needs, and priorities of the selected region for effective and tailored community-based flood management
- Soliciting input from and facilitating dialogue among national and local stakeholders on the project and opportunities for synergies with already ongoing or planned initiatives in the target region; and
- Foster high-level commitment and leadership to support the project activities
Duration and Participants
The one-day face-to-face workshop will be held on 27th April 2025 – location still to be determined and defined (organized by DHM and CARD). It will be attended by the staff of national agencies (meteorology, hydrology, disaster management, environmental agencies etc.), representatives of district disaster management volunteers and sub-committee representatives from each of the targeted areas related to the project (check Annex1), including WMO representatives.
Outcome of the Inception Workshop
The inception workshop is expected to recommend guiding principles for the project partners (WMO and cross-sectoral agencies and community representatives of Nepal) ensuring their regular participation and coordination support from each other in the planning and implementation of the community-based flood management activities that will follow. This will ensure the ownership of the developed knowledge products and services by the participating stakeholders after the project period.
