openIMIS-DRG Datathon Jun 3rd -Jun 5th, 2022

BACKGROUND

The open-source Insurance Management Information System (openIMIS) is the first open-source software that manages social (health) protection schemes by linking beneficiary, provider, and payer data. With a modular structure, openIMIS can be modified according to country-specific needs.

The initiative aims to contribute to the "gradual inclusion of hitherto excluded populations into social (health) protection schemes by improving the schemes' data and information management capacities through openIMIS." Part of its objectives is to complement ICT infrastructure for insurance and other finance mechanisms with openIMIS or specific modules.

Diagnosis-related groups (DRGs)  is a system of clustering diagnosis and treatment according to resource utilization. DRGs have been found to be important tools in assuring health equity.

Anticipating a future where Diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) will be embedded in many OpenIMIS implementations,  Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN) with collaboration Center for Applied Research and Development (CARD)  is launching a datathon to invite young digital health advocates to study the OpenIMIS data model and the Thai DRG-compliant 12-table system. Through this datathon, the elements of DRG (which are present in the Thai 12-tables) that are not yet in OpenIMIS can be discovered. These missing data elements will then be fed into the future development of OpenIMIS database design for countries (ex: Nepal, Tanzania, etc.).

THIS COMPETITION IS FOR:

Datathon is open to students from following backgrounds working in collaboration with medical domain students/experts.

Data engineers
Computer engineers
IT professionals

MECHANICS

  • Each team must have a minimum of two engineering/IT students and collaboration with medical domain experts is preferred.
  • A registry of teams needs to be done until the deadline
  • Shortlisting of teams will be done by the organizing committee.
  • The selected team will be provided with the OpenIMIS data model and the DRG 12 tables from Thailand.
  • Orientation webinars about the openIMIS data model  and the Thailand DRG 12 tables will be provided to the registered teams
  • Each team will map the two data models with each other (in a Google sheet).

Example: The mapping of a spreadsheet with two columns:

Given DATA openIMIS.data  DRG.data
Sample Output Column A: openIMIS.lastname  Column B: DRG. family_name

PRIZES

The first three teams to submit the most complete and most accurate mapping (through Googlesheet in a Google Drive to be shared during datathon) will win a prize.

First prize

EUR 500

Second prize

EUR 300

Third prize

EUR 200

  • If there is a tie, the earlier submission wins i.e. winner is decided based on the timestamp of submission.
  • Accuracy will be determined by a team composed of IOE, AeHIN, and OpenIMIS technical staff.

WINNERS

The first three teams to submit the most complete and most accurate mapping won win the prizes on Jul 4th from Prof. Dr. Shashidhar Ram Joshi, Dean, IOE .

An awarding ceremony was held at the Library Hall, Pulchowk campus on Jul 4th between 12:00- 1:00 pm with Prof. Dr. Shashidhar Ram Joshi, Dean, IOE as a Chief Guest, and Dr. Alvin Marcelo, Executive Director, AeHIN as a special guest.
